Cottages, Clay and a Century of Pipe

The village kept its original plumbing

Abermain began as a pit village in 1903, and many of the weatherboard and fibro cottages along Cessnock Road still run on the original galvanised supply lines from when they were built. Brown water from the first tap of the day is the sign it is rusting inside. Census figures count 892 dwellings, and separate houses make up 95.3 per cent, so the work here is almost all cottage plumbing: yards, verandahs and laundries.

The ground moves under the drains

Most backyards near Cessnock Road got clay sewer pipe while the village was young, and the ground swelling and shrinking ever since has cracked it. Old gums and peppercorns on the older streets go after those cracks when winter is dry, so a blockage here usually has a broken joint behind it.

Frost finishes old cylinders

Hot water cylinders tucked on back verandahs or in a laundry corner are reaching the end at around the same time. The village averages 5.5 frost days a year, and one cold night can finish a unit that has been rusting quietly.

The Jobs That Come From This Village

Each of these problems has its own page, and the run covers them all:

Plumber collecting gear from the ute toolbox

Emergency plumbing

For rusted galvanised fittings that split under old floors and flood the subfloor, or a flexi hose from a quick vanity upgrade letting go in a bathroom.

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

For cracked clay sewers and the root masses packed into them, from a single clear to a dig where a section has failed.

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

For cylinders in their last winters, from a repair that buys time to a straight swap, with a temporary tank while the new system arrives.

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

For homes converted to gas along the way, where old fittings and pipes pass through walls without a sleeve behind stoves and heaters.

The village sits low on slow-draining clay, so water ponds in yards after a storm and the gullies fill faster than old pipe can clear them. That stormwater work sits with the drains side of the run.

Questions From Abermain Households

Do you charge to come out to Abermain?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). After-hours jobs carry the after-hours rate, and that figure is on the quote before you decide anything, so nothing is a surprise on the invoice.

Can you replace the old galvanised water pipes in a cottage here?

Yes. A rusted galvanised service can be swapped for new pipe in the older cottages, and a pressure test first shows whether the whole run needs it or just one section. The price for either path is fixed before we start.
